Chile has a fascinating group of original inhabitants, the "Mapuche ("mapu": earth, and "che": people). About 1.2 million are active today, with the historical center between Pucón, Temuco, Valdivia, and about 300 miles farther north. Many of them still practice their own language, costumes, dress and activities. Most speak Spanish as well, but English is rare. They resisted the Spanish for 330 years; it´s a fascinating culture, and you are in the center of it here.
